Four Semesters Plus: Jazz and Popular Studies - First Semester - Alex Darqui - A concise and innovative approach to playing jazz and popular music which may be used by beginning, intermediate or advanced pianists. If you already have basic skills, a teacher may not be necessary. Rather than presenting different arrangements to be played and imitated, this method establishes a technical foundation, with progressive scale and chord exercises that give the pianist understanding of jazz theory and harmony. All major and minor keys are mastered through scales and four-note system exercises. First Semester studies include Blues scales, major key Turnarounds, seventh/ninth chords, 13th chords, flat 9ths and 13ths and more, presented in weekly lessons. Music for the suggested practice pieces needs to be obtained separately, or different selections may be utilized. Regardless of your choice of individual songs, if this method is practiced, you will improve your playing skills and acquire a more professional style and sound. Alex Darqui is a gifted classical and jazz pianist who has been playing gigs in South Florida for over 35 years. He has accompanied many internationally known stars, performed solo and with numerous bands. Alex recorded on his friend Jaco Pastorius' 1976 Epic Records release. Since 1982 he has taught jazz piano to South Florida college students, while continuing to perform and record.
